There's a Ghost Girl In My House by Sophie Mutiara Nova
Publication Date: October 1, 2026
The extremely relatable agoraphobic Kai moves into an apartment that turns out to already have an occupant--the eponymous ghost girl. The irony of a character with a mental health disorder encountering a paranormal entity is an interesting inciting thought experiment worthy of exploration. But the story gets weirder from there. This short novella reads to me almost like a Star Trek episode--we meet an impossible character, the protagonist befriends them, there's an even unlikelier enemy, a quest for odd ingredients to knock the protag out of their comfort zone, and then an extremely trippy denouemont. I'm not surprised that the author is a filmographer. Queerness is the least of the oddities in store, but grounded in Kai's anxiety and the sweet relationship between Kai and GG (Ghost Girl), the reader roots for them to prevail against internet necromancers and undead Puritans alike.
