Favorite Books of 2023 & Most Anticipated Books of 2024

 I missed TTT the past couple weeks, and I'm more interested in reflecting on last year's reads, since, per usual, I'm not planning to read a lot of new releases this year. I read my most favorite books of 2023 toward the beginning of the year, probably since that's also when I read my most anticipated reads for the year, but a few sleeper hits snuck in at the end. Overall, it was a good and occasionally great reading year--toward the end there were some more mediocre reads, but I still don't regret them because I learned something from them and I also enjoy the experience of reading to discuss with other people at my book clubs.

Favorite Books I Read in 2023

  1. Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree--I love how I had to request my library to purchase this in 2022, and it won the Nebula and the Hugo in 2023--very deservedly! I am loving the era of cozy fantasy!
  2. Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore
  3. Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak by Charlie Jane Anders
  4. The Cloisters by Katy Hays
  5. The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb
  6. The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris
  7. The Shadow of Theron by Kathryn Troy
  8. Your Emergency Contact Has Experienced an Emergency by Chen Chen
  9. Role Playing by Cathy Yardley
  10. Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
  11. We Were Dreamers by Simu Liu
  12. The Collected Regrets of Clover by Mikki Brammer--One of the last books I read in December, for a new book club; surprisingly poignant as well as quirky.
  13. Kissing Kosher by Jean Meltzer--Also one of the last books I read in December--a romance but also very concerned with Jewish and chronic illness rep and life.
  14. A Vision in Crimson by Kathryn Troy--ARC coming soon--I really enjoyed it, and it was just as well-written though very different in content than Shadow of Theron.

Cozy/Atmospheric Reads

I love this topic for rejoining Top Ten Tuesday!  I'm trying to lean in as much as possible to the coziness of fall and the upcoming winter season. I've done a lot better with that the last few years. Just because it isn't my favorite doesn't mean I can't enjoy it. Plus, some books I'm reading lately that are apropos for the Halloween atmosphere pervading my neighborhood this month at least.  Cozy/Atmospheric Reads Adenashire, a Cozy Fantasy Book Series by J. Penner--These books are the epitome of cozy fantasy with distinctive characters from a variety of creative fantasy backgrounds, including orcs, fennex, and gargoyles. The Bloodstained Key by Charity Rau--Not so cozy, but stiflingly atmospheric--a Gothic novel set inside a fairytale. The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall--Really captures the cozy atmosphere of a small town and a trove of magical family secrets. My Reactions to Common Book Buzzwords or Phrases

I'm trying to post but take it easy, so I'm including my reactions to some of the example buzzwords Jana used in the prompt, plus any more I think of. I had some very strong and immediate reactions, probably since these buzzwords are so common, especially in romance and the romantasy that's ultrapopular these days! Happy Top Ten Tuesday! My Reactions to Common Book Buzzwords or Phrases Phrase: "Morally grey characters" My Reaction: NO. Why?: I'm thoroughly sick of this trend, especially because it typically means "morally grey male love interest" which typically actually means "I fell in love with a serial killer BUT HE LOOOOVES ME." No. Don't get me wrong, I can and do enjoy genuinely nuanced characters and I do not expect anyone, much less a fictional character, to be perfect nor do I want them to be, but if I see that phrase, I think Rhysand, or, at best, Christian Grey, and I'm just not into that.
